Went to the market today. It's held in an old pig abattoir and full of junk and treasure. I found a Nazi Iron Cross, a framed photo of a girl with a rake, gramophones, guns, daggers, rocking horses, jewellery and this picture above of girls swirling. swirl girl. May utilise this for future Babka costume ideas...

Posters

When looking at the history of women in Poland I found the images of women in propaganda posters fascinating. Posters are a reflection of the time as well as a way to shape the politics of the time. They are a visual way to communicate a message whether it is political, educational or informational. They are also used as a form of propaganda. Propaganda is a way to influence people’s ideas and to change their attitudes to further a political or other type of agenda. Found some brilliant books on Nazi Propaganda with images of Germans tying up British lions and running over Americans in tanks. 

Socialist ideology in general opposed traditional roles of women, creating this new role of ‘working women’, however traditional patriarchal elements were also made to fit into this framework. The model of the Polish mother and also the peasant were made into this new model of woman worker. 

These images are a mixture of posters from all over the world and from different time periods and political situations. For me they are an accurate reflection of the many ways in which women have been represented throughout history.

Grandmother

So I have found myself a Babka, I have also found myself a grandma. Me, Roksana and Grandma Roksana are getting together sometime next week. In the meantime I will stare at my very own curvy babka and enjoy the smell she is emitting into my room. 

Gonna be an engineer

A video of Peggy Seeger's Gonna be an engineer. A woman came into work and got really excited about the fact that she could listen to this song. She put it on the jukebox and sat down to listening to it, tapping her foot with a secret smile on her face. When it finished, she stood up and thanked me. She said it was the first time she had listened to it in years.

"Well, I listened to my mother and I joined a typing pool
Listened to my lover and I put him through his school
If I listen to the boss, I'm just a bloody fool

Censorship of Women's Art in Poland

Getting excited by the case of Dorotea Nieznalska; a Polish visual artist who was taken to court by conservative Catholics for her installation Pasja (2002). The piece contained a close up shot of a body builder working out as well as a cross with the image of a penis on it. Nieznalska's victory in the courts was hailed as a success for freedom of speech by liberal media.

Babka

Babka translates as 'grandmother' and is a traditional Polish cake. It is shaped to look like swirling skirts.
Now all I need to do is find a grandmother to make one with.
